About John Hoare

A lighting cameraman based in London, I've been shooting since 1990 across digital and celluloid and have filmed in some 15 countries.

I enjoy the variety of film-making: run-and-gun docs through carefully crafted studio lighting. I'm currently combining a low budget feature film with shooting for brands such as Daily Telegraph, Historic England, Facebook and DHL. I also edit on Final Cut X.

I have been director of photography on award winning drama (The Other Man, Best Short Film, Edinburgh Film Festival) and am always looking out for good scripts.

I am an approved BBC freelancer, and have completed the BBC Safeguarding Trust course.

In Jan 2017 I co-presented a workshop "Shooting for HDR" for the Guild of Television Cameramen.

I serve the story and love my work.

"I’ve worked with many DoP’s and John is definitely up there with the best of them. His lighting is evocative and he can capture mood wonderfully. His camerawork is truly professional. He’s flexible in his approach, constructive, fast and efficient with a great sense of humour and genuine a joy to work with. His experience shows in the quality of his work. I shall be using his tremendous talent again.”

David Lewis Richardson. Director Shameless, Producer/Director Hollyoaks.
"John Hoare was my DoP for a project called Disintegrate (http://disintegrate.us). The scenes often contained a "ghost" which required the actress on green screen. John was a fantastic resource, he was fastidious about getting the screen correctly illuminated so that the post production key is clean, and very helpful during shot planning to ensure the background and foreground plates matched in luminosity and focal length.

John is highly professional and delightfully congenial, both are essential qualities for production."
